SYNOPSIS
Designates first Saturday of October as "Latino Clergy Day."

A Joint Resolution designating the first Saturday of October as "Latino Clergy Day" in New Jersey.
Whereas, Each year, the State of New Jersey observes National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens that claim heritage to Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America; and
Whereas, Latinos have played an integral role in the progress and development of our State, with contributions in science, medicine, literature, art, education, military, business, and religion; and
Whereas, Among the numerous professions and occupations held by Latinos, the clergy plays a vital role in providing spiritual, intellectual, and socio-economic support in our communities; and
Whereas, "Latino Clergy Day" in New Jersey is proposed by the New Jersey Coalition of Latino Pastors and Ministers, a collective group of Christian leaders across all denominations that works to effectively empower Latinos and communities that are economically, socially, politically, and spiritually disenfranchised; and
Whereas, It is fitting and proper for the State of New Jersey to recognize and honor men and women of Latino descent in our State who provide spiritual mentorship and religious leadership as proposed by the New Jersey Coalition of Latino Pastors and Ministers, a collective group of Christian leaders across all denominations that works to effectively empower Latinos and communities that are economically, socially, politically, and spiritually disenfranchised; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
1. The first Saturday of October of each year is designated as "Latino Clergy Day" in the State of New Jersey.
2. The Governor is requested to annually issue a proclamation calling upon public officials and citizens of this State to observe "Latino Clergy Day" with appropriate activities and programs.
3. This joint resolution shall take effect immediately.
STATEMENT
Latinos have played an integral role in the progress and development of our State, with contributions in science, medicine, literature, art, education, military, business, and religion.
The State should recognize the work of Latino ministers, pastors, and priests in New Jersey who tirelessly provide the support and guidance for the well-being of our Latino communities.
"Latino Clergy Day" in New Jersey is proposed, by the New Jersey Coalition of Latino Pastors and Ministers, a collective group of Christian leaders, across all denominations that works to effectively empower Latinos and communities that are economically, socially, politically, and spiritually disenfranchised.
National Clergy Appreciation Day is observed on the second Sunday in October in conjunction with National Clergy Month celebrated in October. It is fitting and proper for the State of New Jersey to recognize and honor men and women of Latino descent in our State who provide moral and religious leadership with love and compassion and designate the first Saturday of October as "Latino Clergy Day" in New Jersey.
