        AN ACT in relation to directing the commissioner of education to conduct
          a study regarding the assistance needed to encourage women and minori-
          ties to pursue technology careers in science, technology,  engineering
          and mathematics (STEM)

          The  People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-
        bly, do enact as follows:

     1    Section 1. The commissioner of education  shall  conduct  a  study  to
     2  determine  the  amount  of assistance, including financial, technical or
     3  any other assistance, needed to encourage women and minorities to pursue
     4  technology careers in science, technology, engineering  and  mathematics
     5  (STEM).  Such study shall determine the amount of such assistance needed
     6  in school districts, charter schools, boards of cooperative  educational
     7  services  and  private  schools, to develop new and enhance current STEM
     8  programs in grades six  through  twelve,  including  career  exploration
     9  activities,  opportunities  for technical skills attainment and partner-
    10  ships with postsecondary education and training  programs,  to  increase
    11  participation  by  women  and  minority students in STEM programs.  Such
    12  study shall include data on the number of women and minorities  in  this
    13  state  that  are currently in STEM related programs, the availability of
    14  STEM grants to women and minorities and the number of women and minority
    15  applicants applying for such STEM grants.
    16    § 2. The commissioner of education shall submit a report  which  shall
    17  include  the findings and conclusions of such study, including recommen-

     1  dations, to the governor, the temporary president  of  the  senate,  the
     2  speaker of the assembly and the chairs of the senate and assembly educa-
     3  tion  committees no later than December 31, 2021.  On or before December
     4  31,  2022  and  annually thereafter, the commissioner of education shall
     5  update such report to include the data required by section one  of  this
     6  act for the preceding year.
     7    § 3. This act shall take effect immediately.
