        AN  ACT to amend the executive law, in relation to requiring fire extin-
          guishers in every rented dwelling
          The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and  Assem-
        bly, do enact as follows:
     1    Section 1. Section 378 of the executive law is amended by adding a new
     2  subdivision 5-e to read as follows:
     3    5-e.  Standards  for installation of fire extinguishers requiring that
     4  every living unit not occupied by the owner of such living  unit,  which
     5  shall  include  but  not  be  limited  to, a two-family dwelling, or any
     6  dwelling accommodation located in a building owned as a  condominium  or
     7  cooperative  in the state or any multiple dwellings shall have installed
     8  an operable fire extinguisher of such manufacture, design and  installa-
     9  tion  standards  as are established by the council. For purposes of this
    10  subdivision, multiple dwelling means a dwelling which is  either  rented
    11  or  leased  to be occupied, or is occupied as the temporary or permanent
    12  residence or home of three or more families living independently of each
    13  other, including but not limited to  the  following:  a  tenement,  flat
    14  house,  maisonette  apartment, apartment house, apartment hotel, tourist
    15  house, bachelor apartment, studio apartment, duplex apartment,  kitchen-
    16  ette  apartment,  hotel,  lodging  house, rooming house, boarding house,
    17  boarding and nursery school, furnished room house, club, sorority house,
    18  fraternity house, college and school dormitory, convalescent, old age or
    19  nursing homes or residences.
    20    § 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
