STATE OF NEW YORK ________________________________________________________________________ 1801--A 2019-2020 Regular Sessions IN ASSEMBLY January 17, 2019 ___________ Introduced by M. of A. PHEFFER AMATO, D'URSO, ORTIZ, COOK, COLTON, JONES -- Multi-Sponsored by -- M. of A. ABBATE -- read once and referred to the Committee on Education -- committee discharged, bill amended, ordered reprinted as amended and recommitted to said committee AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to providing for the observance of September 11th Remembrance Day and providing for the observance of a brief period of silence in public school classrooms at the opening of such day The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem- bly, do enact as follows: 1 Section 1. Subdivision 2 of section 802 of the education law is 2 amended to read as follows: 3 2. a. It shall also be [his] the duty of the commissioner to make 4 special provision for the observance in the public schools of Lincoln's 5 birthday, Washington's birthday, Memorial day and Flag day, and such 6 other legal holidays of like character as may be hereafter designated by 7 law when the legislature makes an appropriation therefor. 8 b. It shall also be the duty of the commissioner to make special 9 provision for the observance of a brief period of silence for September 10 11th Remembrance Day in public elementary and secondary schools, includ- 11 ing charter schools to be conducted on the eleventh day of September. 12 § 2.
