        AN ACT to amend the public health law, in relation to  health  care  and
          wellness education and outreach programs for preventing sudden cardiac
          arrest among student athletes
          The  People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-
        bly, do enact as follows:
     1    Section 1. Subdivision 1 of section 207 of the public  health  law  is
     2  amended by adding a new paragraph (p) to read as follows:
     3    (p)  Preventing  sudden cardiac arrest among students participating in
     4  school sporting  events,  including  recommending  evidenced-based  best
     5  practices  for  health  certificates  required  pursuant to section nine
     6  hundred three of the education law, screening exams required for partic-
     7  ipation in interscholastic athletics, and information for  students  and
     8  their  parents and guardians regarding sudden cardiac arrest. Such mate-
     9  rials shall be developed in conjunction with the commissioner of  educa-
    10  tion, the Medical Society of the State of New York, the New York chapter
    11  of  the  American  Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Heart Associ-
    12  ation, and shall include an explanation of sudden  cardiac  arrest,  its
    13  incidence  among student athletes, a description of early warning signs,
    14  and an overview of the options that are privately  available  to  screen
    15  for  cardiac conditions that may lead to sudden cardiac arrest including
    16  a statement about the limitations of these options.
    17    § 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
