STATE OF NEW YORK ________________________________________________________________________ 6761 2017-2018 Regular Sessions IN ASSEMBLY March 17, 2017 ___________ Introduced by M. of A. SOLAGES -- read once and referred to the Commit- tee on Transportation AN ACT to require the New York state department of transportation, in consultation with the department of motor vehicles, the governor's traffic safety committee, local police agencies, local transportation entities in Nassau and Suffolk to conduct a study to evaluate the configuration of entrance and exit ramps, and signage at entrance ways and exits on the Southern State Parkway in Nassau and Suffolk counties to determine whether adequate safety measures exist to prevent colli- sions and the instance of wrong way drivers The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem- bly, do enact as follows: 1 Section 1. The department of transportation, in consultation with the 2 department of motor vehicles, the governor's traffic safety committee, 3 local police agencies, local transportation entities in Nassau and 4 Suffolk counties, local government stakeholders, and any other agency or 5 group the department of transportation deems necessary to enlist the aid 6 of, shall conduct a study to evaluate the configuration of entrance and 7 exit ramps, and signage at entrance ways and exits on the Southern State 8 Parkway in Nassau and Suffolk counties to determine whether adequate 9 safety measures exist to prevent collisions and the instances of wrong 10 way drivers. Such study shall include, but not be limited to, design and 11 safety of the configuration of entrance and exit ramps and the feasibil- 12 ity of implementing design changes to increase safety and reduce the 13 likelihood of collisions and wrong way driving; and the design and level 14 of safety of the signage located at entrance ways and exits and the 15 feasibility of implementing signage design changes to increase driver 16 visibility of such signage and reduce the likelihood of a collision and 17 wrong way driving; and federal funding available for highway safety 18 improvement projects. The department of transportation is authorized to EXPLANATION--Matter in italics (underscored) is new; matter in brackets [] is old law to be omitted. LBD04675-01-7A. 6761 2 1 conduct any hearings it deems necessary to accomplish the purposes of 2 this act. 3 § 2. The commissioner of transportation shall issue a report to the 4 governor, the Long Island Delegation of the Legislature, Nassau and 5 Suffolk county executives, and Nassau and Suffolk county legislatures 6 with detailed recommendations and findings within two years of the 7 effective date of this act. 8 § 3. This act shall take effect immediately.
