STATE OF NEW YORK ________________________________________________________________________ 8658 2019-2020 Regular Sessions IN ASSEMBLY October 2, 2019 ___________ Introduced by M. of A. MIKULIN -- read once and referred to the Commit- tee on Transportation AN ACT to amend the highway law, the transportation law, the canal law and the parks, recreation and historic preservation law, in relation to a prohibition on renaming highways, bridges, waterways and parks after politicians The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem- bly, do enact as follows: 1 Section 1. The highway law is amended by adding a new section 332 to 2 read as follows: 3 § 332. Renaming of highways, routes and thruways; prohibition. On or 4 after the effective date of this section, no highways, state routes or 5 thruways in this state shall be named after an individual that serves or 6 served as an elected official, whether at the federal, state or local 7 level. 8 § 2. The transportation law is amended by adding a new section 23 to 9 read as follows: 10 § 23. Renaming of bridges; prohibition. On or after the effective date 11 of this section, no bridge in this state shall be named after an indi- 12 vidual that serves or served as an elected official, whether at the 13 federal, state or local level. 14 § 3. The canal law is amended by adding a new section 135 to read as 15 follows: 16 § 135. Renaming of canals and waterways; prohibition. On or after the 17 effective date of this section, no canal or waterway in this state shall 18 be named after an individual that serves or served as an elected offi- 19 cial, whether at the federal, state or local level. 20 § 4. The parks, recreation and historic preservation law is amended by 21 adding a new section 29.17 to read as follows: 22 § 29.17 Renaming of parks; prohibition. On or after the effective date 23 of this section, no park in this state shall be named after an individ- 24 ual that serves or served as an elected official, whether at the feder- 25 al, state or local level. 26 § 5.
