Senate Resolution No. 418 BY: Senator MAY HONORING Dina Eldawy upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of a 2019 Marshall Scholarship WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to honor the young adults of today and leaders of tomorrow whose character and achievements best exemplify the ideals and values cherished by this great State and Nation; and WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Dina Eldawy upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of a 2019 Marshall Scholarship; and WHEREAS, The Marshall Scholarship is one of the most prestigious academic honors in higher education, created in 1953 by the Parliament of the United Kingdom in gratitude for the Marshall Plan, to strengthen the relationship between the British and American peoples, to support future leaders, and to promote the advancement of knowledge; and WHEREAS, Marshall Scholars have gone on to serve with distinction at the highest levels of government, business, academia, the arts, the law, and throughout society; and WHEREAS, A senior at Syracuse University (SU), Dina Eldawy is a double major in International Relations in the College of Arts and Sciences and in Citizenship and Civic Engagement at the Maxwell School; she gives tirelessly of her time and energies as an intern in the North Side Learning Center teaching English to high school girls from Somalia and Syria; and WHEREAS, She has also been involved in interfaith activism on her campus; worked to educate Bolivian and Peruvian immigrants in Chile; worked to educate Palestinian refugees in Lebanon; and interned at the Migration Policy Center in Washington, D.C., working as a research intern for the National Center on Immigrant Integration Policy; and WHEREAS, Throughout her educational career, Dina Eldawy has demonstrated exceptional academic talent; she is a Coronat Scholar at the Syracuse University College of Arts and Sciences, was a member of the Renee Crown University Honors Program, received the 2018 Truman Scholar, and was a 2018-19 Remembrance Scholar; and WHEREAS, This esteemed young woman plans to obtain a one-year Master's degree from the University of Sussex in Migration and Global Development; plans to obtain a one-year Master's degree from Oxford University in comparative and international education; and plans to dedicate her life to the cause of peace in the Middle East and to education and immigration policy; and WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individuals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to honor Dina Eldawy upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of a 2019 Marshall Scholarship, and to extend best wishes for future success and well-being; and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be transmitted to Dina Eldawy.
