Senate Resolution No. 2145 BY: Senator GRIFFO CONGRATULATING Vincent James Salerno, World War II Veteran, upon the occasion of celebrating his 100th Birthday WHEREAS, Senior citizens bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to the increasingly active roles they play in today's society; their past contributions and future participation are a vital part of, and valuable asset to, the fabric of community life and activity; and WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to congratulate Vincent James Salerno upon the occasion of his 100th Birthday, to be celebrated with a brunch at his residence, Cedarbrook Village, New Hartford, New York, on Friday, June 21, 2019; and WHEREAS, Vincent James Salerno was born on June 22, 1919; with his zest for life, he has inspired and enhanced the lives of his family and friends; and WHEREAS, In 1942, at age 25, Vincent James Salerno enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed in India where he was a gun site repairman for the B-52s; he was honorably discharged in 1946, with the esteemed rank of Master Sergeant; and WHEREAS, Having exhibited patriotism both at home and abroad, Vincent James Salerno demonstrated his love for his country and merits forevermore, the highest respect of his State and Nation; and WHEREAS, This distinguished man has experienced the incredible joys and sorrows characteristic of and reserved for those with the stamina and courage to savor a full life; and WHEREAS, In the late 1950s, Vincent James Salerno opened Super Value Foods, a grocery store/meat market; after 20 years he sold the business and went to work for Smith Packing where he continued to work until he retired at the age of 99; and WHEREAS, Vincent James Salerno, the oldest living member of the Fort Schuyler Post No. 1290, was honored and recognized as the Senior Legionnaire of the Year at the Oneida County Convention on June 8, 2019; and WHEREAS, A family man, Vincent James Salerno is the proud father of a son and a daughter, and the loving grandfather of grandchildren and great grandchildren; an upbeat person with a great sense of humor, he enjoys sharing stories about his younger years; his family credits his positive attitude to his long and happy life; and WHEREAS, This beloved man has enriched the lives of those around him through his joyous and sincere love for others and through the quiescent charm and wisdom which comes only from a fullness of years; and WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to publicly recognize those who have reached such a remarkable age and who have witnessed and celebrated the innovations, cultural developments and awesome achievements of this country during the last century, while themselves contributing to the growth and excellence of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to congratulate Vincent James Salerno upon the occasion of celebrating his 100th Birthday; and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be transmitted to Vincent James Salerno.
