Senate Resolution No. 2827 BY: Senator PERSAUD COMMEMORATING the 40th Anniversary of the Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize that the quality and character of life in the communities across New York State are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those organizations and individuals who would devote themselves to the welfare of the community and its citizenry; and WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern and in full accord with its long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program; and WHEREAS, With a long-standing record of outstanding service, the Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program has worked continuously to fulfill its mission of providing education, support, empowerment, and advocacy for breast cancer patients, professionals, and the overall community; and WHEREAS, Established in 1980, this esteemed non-profit organization began as a support group for women who had undergone mastectomies at the Adelphi University School of Social Work; these early group members, along with Adelphi staff, faculty, and interns, developed the Women to Women Hotline which was introduced in 1982, offering nine trained volunteers available for seven hours a week to assist breast cancer patients; and WHEREAS, Over time, the Women to Women Hotline expanded and grew into the Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program, a comprehensive organization offering information, referrals, and emotional support to all of New York State; and WHEREAS, A true pioneer in offering services to underserved populations, the Adelphi Program has throughout the years created unique and innovative responses to the emerging needs of breast cancer patients and their families; and WHEREAS, Today, the Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program is the oldest breast cancer hotline in the country, and includes over 100 trained and supervised volunteers, most of whom are breast cancer survivors, as well as a professional social work staff who provide services to thousands of New Yorkers annually; and WHEREAS, In addition, this remarkable program also works to raise awareness about breast cancer and the need for early detection, offering speakers at no charge for professional, business, industry and community groups, with a special emphasis on outreach to underserved communities; and WHEREAS, Furthermore, the Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program is a founding member of the National Breast Cancer Coalition, a group which works to focus the administration, United States Congress, research institutions and consumer advocates on eradicating breast cancer; and WHEREAS, The success of the Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program is in direct correlation to the efforts of its dedicated volunteers and staff, whose involvement is, and always has been, characterized by an impressive commitment, an unbridled enthusiasm, and an uncompromising standard of excellence in all endeavors on behalf of the organization and the community it serves; and WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when organizations and individuals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to commemorate the celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program, recognizing its long and sustained commitment to the health and welfare of the citizens of the State of New York; and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be transmitted to the Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program.
