        AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to student governments

          The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and  Assem-
        bly, do enact as follows:

     1    Section 1. The education law is amended by adding a new section 817 to
     2  read as follows:
     3    § 817. Student government. The board of education or trustees of every
     4  school  district  serving  high  school  students in grades nine through
     5  twelve with no districtwide or school  building  peer  selected  student
     6  government  shall establish at least one student government organization
     7  within such district or school building with the goal  of  ensuring  all
     8  eligible  students  have  the opportunity to participate in such student
     9  government.
    10    § 2. This act shall  take  effect  on  the  first  of  September  next
    11  succeeding the date on which it shall have become a law.
