STATE OF NEW YORK ________________________________________________________________________ 8491 IN SENATE June 5, 2020 ___________ Introduced by Sen. BAILEY -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Rules AN ACT to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of the state highway system as the "Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. - Michael Henry Schwerner Memorial Bridge" The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem- bly, do enact as follows: 1 Section 1. The highway law is amended by adding a new section 344-l to 2 read as follows: 3 § 344-l. Portion of the state highway system to be designated as the 4 "Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. - Michael Henry Schwerner Memorial Bridge". 5 The bridge otherwise known as the "3rd Street Bridge" beginning on East 6 3rd Street in the town of Mount Vernon, county of Westchester and chang- 7 ing to Boulevard West in the town of Pelham, county of Westchester 8 crossing the Hutchinson Parkway shall be designated and known as the 9 "Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. - Michael Henry Schwerner Memorial Bridge". 10 § 2. The commissioner of transportation shall provide for the instal- 11 lation and maintenance of adequate signing of the state highway system 12 as designated pursuant to section one of this act. However, to avoid 13 confusion and to limit any possible disruption of commerce, the desig- 14 nation called for pursuant to section one of this act shall be one of 15 ceremonial nature and the official name of such bridge shall not be 16 changed as a result of this act. 17 § 3.
