A RESOLUTION

Designating January 2009 as "School Director Recognition Month"

2

in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, Local school districts and their governing boards

4

were established by the General Assembly more than 150 years

5

ago; and

6

WHEREAS, Public education is the only public service mandated

7

by the Constitution of Pennsylvania; and

8

WHEREAS, School board members govern individual school

9

districts, establish local policies, approve educational

10

programs, provide necessary physical facilities, hire properly

11

certified professional and classified employees and share in

12

costs by raising necessary local funds used along with State

funds to operate district educational programs; and

2

WHEREAS, Being an effective school director is no easy task,

3

particularly in the current climate of school change; and

4

WHEREAS, Today's lay school leaders need to be knowledgeable

5

about many complex educational and social issues; and

6

WHEREAS, School board service is perhaps the purest form of

7

grass roots democratic principles upon which our republic was

8

founded; and

9

WHEREAS, Local public school directors are dedicated,

10

educated, responsible citizens who carry out the truest form of

11

representative government in our democracy, volunteer public

12

service; therefore be it

13

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the

14

month of January 2009 as "School Director Recognition Month" in

15

Pennsylvania; and be it further

16

RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be immediately

17

transmitted to the Pennsylvania School Boards Association.
