A RESOLUTION

Recognizing the week of November 13, 2011, as "Hunger and

Homelessness Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, The National Coalition for the Homeless and the

4

National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness

5

cosponsor "National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week" each

6

year during the week prior to Thanksgiving; and

7

WHEREAS, Coordinated activities take place during this week

8

to promote education, service and action domestically and

9

internationally with the aim of ending hunger and homelessness

10

and strengthening individuals and communities; and

11

WHEREAS, The National Coalition for the Homeless estimates

12

that there are 3.5 million homeless persons in the United

13

States, and the number is increasing due to joblessness and a

shortage of available housing; and

WHEREAS, In Pennsylvania, the United States Department of

3

Agriculture reports that 494,600, or 10% of Pennsylvania

4

households, experience hunger; therefore be it

5

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the

6

week of November 13, 2011, as "Hunger and Homelessness Awareness

7

Week" in Pennsylvania and urge Pennsylvanians to gain a greater

8

awareness of the problems of hunger and homelessness in their

9

communities and this Commonwealth.
