| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Recognizing the month of November 2009 as "Patriotic Music |
2 | Month" in Pennsylvania. |
3 | WHEREAS, American patriotic music is a part of the culture |
4 | and history of the United States since its founding in the 18th |
5 | century and has served to encourage feelings of national unity; |
6 | and |
7 | WHEREAS, Patriotic songs include hymns, military themes, |
8 | national songs and music from stage and screen, as well as songs |
9 | adapted from poems; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Much of American patriotic music owes its origins to |
11 | four main wars, the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the |
12 | American Civil War and the Spanish American War; and |
13 | WHEREAS, "The Liberty Song," written by John Dickinson in |
14 | 1768 to the music of William Boyce's "Heart of Oak," is perhaps |

1 | the first patriotic song written in the United States; and |
2 | WHEREAS, Songs such as "My Country, 'Tis of Thee" composed in |
3 | 1831 and the "Star Spangled Banner" have as their theme freedom |
4 | and liberty; and |
5 | WHEREAS, Patriotic songs such as "America the Beautiful" |
6 | express appreciation for the natural beauty of the United States |
7 | and the hope for a better nation; and |
8 | WHEREAS, During the events leading up to the American Civil |
9 | War, both the North and the South generated a number of songs, |
10 | such as "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," to stir up patriotic |
11 | sentiments ; and |
12 | WHEREAS, After the Civil War, the sentiments of most |
13 | patriotic songs were geared to rebuilding and consolidating the |
14 | United States; and |
15 | WHEREAS, The beginning of the 20th century gave birth to |
16 | several of the most popular patriotic songs, including "Anchors |
17 | Aweigh," composed by Charles A. Zimmerman in 1906, and "You're a |
18 | Grand Old Flag," composed by George M. Cohan in 1906; and |
19 | WHEREAS, World War I, the "War to End All Wars," produced |
20 | patriotic American songs such as "Over There" by popular |
21 | songwriter George M. Cohan and a 1918 Irving Berlin composition, |
22 | "God Bless America," which is sometimes referred to as the |
23 | unofficial national anthem of the United States; and |
24 | WHEREAS, The World War II era produced a significant number |
25 | of patriotic songs in the Big Band and Swing format, and popular |
26 | patriotic songs of the time included "Remember Pearl Harbor" and |
27 | "God Bless America"; and |
28 | WHEREAS, Patriotic songs in the latter half of the 20th |
29 | century included "Ballad of the Green Berets" during the Vietnam |
30 | War and Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the USA" during the years of |

1 | the first Gulf War; therefore be it |
2 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the |
3 | role of patriotic music in the evolution of our country and the |
4 | patriotic fervor that it instills in our citizenry, particularly |
5 | in regard to support for our military personnel and for our |
6 | veteran community; and be it further |
7 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the |
8 | month of November 2009 as "Patriotic Music Month" in |
9 | Pennsylvania and encourage the citizens of Pennsylvania to |
10 | organize and participate in patriotic music events in |
11 | communities across this Commonwealth. |
