| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Commemorating the dedication of a monument at Chaplain's Hill in |
2 | Arlington National Cemetery to remember the fourteen Jewish |
3 | chaplains who died in service to our country. |
4 | WHEREAS, Since 1775, military chaplains have served as |
5 | religious and spiritual leaders for millions of soldiers and |
6 | their families; and |
7 | WHEREAS, Chaplain's Hill, located at Arlington National |
8 | Cemetery, is home to several monuments that pay respect to |
9 | chaplains who served during various conflicts; and |
10 | WHEREAS, In 1926, a monument was dedicated at Arlington |
11 | National Cemetery to the 23 chaplains who lost their lives in |
12 | World War I; and |
13 | WHEREAS, In 1981, Protestant chaplains who died in World War |
14 | I and World War II were similarly honored in a monument on |

1 | Chaplain's Hill, paid for by private funds; and |
2 | WHEREAS, In 1989, 83 Catholic chaplains who gave their lives |
3 | in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict were |
4 | memorialized on a monument on Chaplain's Hill, paid for by |
5 | private funds; and |
6 | WHEREAS, On October 24, 2011, a new memorial paid for by |
7 | private funds will be dedicated at Chaplain's Hill to remember |
8 | 14 Jewish chaplains who died in service to their country; and |
9 | WHEREAS, Of the 14 chaplains on this monument, at least four |
10 | of them have connections to Pennsylvania; and |
11 | WHEREAS, Rabbi Alexander Goode, who served Temple Beth Israel |
12 | in York, Pennsylvania, was the first Jewish chaplain to give his |
13 | life for his country when he offered his life jacket to other |
14 | soldiers as his troopship sank off Greenland in February 1943; |
15 | and |
16 | WHEREAS, Rabbi Meir Engel, the first Jewish chaplain in |
17 | Vietnam, served a synagogue in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, |
18 | before taking up a career as a military chaplain during World |
19 | War II; and |
20 | WHEREAS, Rabbi Henry Goody left a synagogue in Greensburg, |
21 | Pennsylvania, to volunteer in World War II and shortly |
22 | afterwards lost his life; and |
23 | WHEREAS, Solomon Rosen, whose father was a military chaplain |
24 | who had died during World War II, came to Carlisle, |
25 | Pennsylvania, where the Army Chaplain School was based from the |
26 | late 1940s until 1951, graduated with the highest honors and |
27 | died shortly afterwards in a military transport crash; and |
28 | WHEREAS, Army Chaplain Rabbi Irving Tepper was killed in |
29 | action in France on August 13, 1944, after seeing combat in |
30 | Morocco, Tunisia and Sicily while attached to an infantry combat |

1 | team in the Ninth Division; and |
2 | WHEREAS, Army Chaplain Rabbi Louis Werfel, also known as the |
3 | "Flying Rabbi" for his determination to visit soldiers no matter |
4 | the distance, died on December 24, 1944, at the young age of 27 |
5 | in a plane crash while en route to conduct Chanukah services; |
6 | and |
7 | WHEREAS, Army Chaplain Rabbi Morton Singer, who taught Judo |
8 | and was a college weightlifting champion, died on December 17, |
9 | 1968, in a plane crash while on a mission in Vietnam to conduct |
10 | Chanukah services; and |
11 | WHEREAS, Army Chaplain Rabbi Herman Rosen, who volunteered |
12 | for military service at the age of 42, died in service of his |
13 | faith and his country on June 18, 1943; and |
14 | WHEREAS, Army Chaplain Rabbi Nachman Arnoff, despite being |
15 | married, a father and in his 40s, volunteered for the chaplaincy |
16 | during World War II and died in service of this faith and his |
17 | country on May 9, 1946; and |
18 | WHEREAS, Army Chaplain Rabbi Frank Goldenberg, who |
19 | volunteered for military service within a year of graduating |
20 | from rabbinical school and in addition to ministering to the |
21 | troops also worked with Holocaust survivors in Europe, died in |
22 | service of his faith and his country on May 22, 1946; and |
23 | WHEREAS, Army Chaplain Rabbi Samuel Hurwitz, who arrived in |
24 | the United States at the age of three and was called to serve as |
25 | a rabbi in diverse locations from the Panama Canal to the |
26 | Southwest and the Midwest over a dozen years, died in service of |
27 | his faith and his country on December 9, 1943; and |
28 | WHEREAS, Air Force Chaplain Rabbi Samuel Rosen, who |
29 | volunteered to serve throughout World War II and the Korean War, |
30 | died in service of his faith and his country on May 13, 1955; |

2 | WHEREAS, Air Force Chaplain Rabbi Joseph Hoenig, who traveled |
3 | all over the Arctic to serve military personnel in Alaska, died |
4 | in service of his faith and his country on December 29, 1966; |
5 | and |
6 | WHEREAS, Air Force Chaplain Rabbi David Sobel, assigned to |
7 | southeast Asia, died in service of his faith and his country on |
8 | March 7, 1974; therefore be it |
9 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate the |
10 | dedication of a monument at Chaplain's Hill in Arlington |
11 | National Cemetery to remember the fourteen Jewish chaplains who |
12 | died in service to our country; and be it further |
13 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the |
14 | service and patriotism of these chaplains who gave their lives |
15 | for their country; and be it further |
16 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives express its |
17 | profound thanks to the family and friends of these chaplains and |
18 | also extend its heartfelt appreciation to the bipartisan, |
19 | interfaith efforts that led to the construction of this |
20 | memorial; and be it further |
21 | RESOLVED, That the Chief Clerk of the House of |
22 | Representatives deliver a copy of this resolution to the |
23 | National and Pennsylvania Headquarters of the American Legion |
24 | and to the JWB Jewish Chaplains Council, which provides full |
25 | support services to Jewish chaplains and administers |
26 | ecclesiastical approval for chaplain candidates and Jewish lay |
27 | leaders in the military. |
