A RESOLUTION

Honoring and celebrating the 100th anniversary of Mt. Lebanon in

2

Allegheny County.

WHEREAS, Mt. Lebanon comprises more than six square miles of

4

western Pennsylvania's hills, operating under a council-manager

5

form of government with five elected commissioners; and

6

WHEREAS, The majority of early settlers were of Scotch-Irish

7

descent; and

8

WHEREAS, Some of Mt. Lebanon's prominent settlers included

9

Andrew McFarlane, the area's first justice of the peace, and

10

Joseph T. McKnight, the first local postmaster; and

11

WHEREAS, In 1901, the first planned subdivision was

12

established; and

13

WHEREAS, By 1905, more than ten subdivisions were approved,

14

transforming this rural area into a modern suburb; and

15

WHEREAS, Mt. Lebanon, currently a home rule municipality in

Allegheny County, was founded on February 6, 1912, as Mount

2

Lebanon Township; and

3

WHEREAS, Mount Lebanon Township split from Scott Township on

4

February 6, 1912, because residents desired greater municipal

5

improvements, such as gas, water, electricity, sewer and other

6

amenities, to quicken development; and

7

WHEREAS, In July 1912, Mount Lebanon School District was

8

established with two schools, and presently the district

9

contains ten schools; and

10

WHEREAS, In 1924, the Liberty Tunnels were completed, turning

11

Mount Lebanon Township into the fastest growing community in

12

Pennsylvania throughout the 1920s, and the Pittsburgh region's

13

premier automobile suburb; and

14

WHEREAS, In 1974, Mount Lebanon Township approved a home rule

15

charter to become a municipality, thereby dropping the

16

"township" moniker and shortening "Mount Lebanon" to "Mt.

17

Lebanon"; and

18

WHEREAS, Mt. Lebanon's population has grown from just 1,705

19

in 1912, to more than 30,000 residents today; and

20

WHEREAS, Several famous residents of Mt. Lebanon include

21

wrestler Kurt Angle, billionaire Mark Cuban, actress Gillian

22

Jacobs and scientist Peter Safar; and

23

WHEREAS, Mt. Lebanon presently contains many planned

24

subdivisions with unique architecture and characteristics, an

25

outstanding school system and excellent municipal services; and

26

WHEREAS, Mt. Lebanon provides a premier example of the

27

automobile suburb; therefore be it

28

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor and

29

celebrate the 100th anniversary of Mt. Lebanon in Allegheny

30

County.
