A RESOLUTION
1Designating February 7 through 14, 2013, as "Congenital Heart
2Defect Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania.
3WHEREAS, Congenital heart defects are the most frequently
4occurring birth defect and the leading cause of birth defect-
5related deaths worldwide; and
6WHEREAS, More than one million families across this nation
7are facing the challenges and hardships of raising children with
8congenital heart defects; and
9WHEREAS, Every year 40,000 babies are born in the United
10States with congenital heart defects; and
11WHEREAS, Some congenital heart defects are not diagnosed
12until months or years after birth; and
13WHEREAS, Undiagnosed congenital heart conditions cause many
14cases of sudden cardiac death in young athletes; and
1WHEREAS, Despite these statistics, newborns and young
2athletes are not routinely screened for congenital heart
3defects; and
4WHEREAS, A disproportionately small amount of funding is
5available for congenital heart defect research and support; and
6WHEREAS, "Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week" provides an
7opportunity for families whose lives have been affected to
8celebrate life and to remember loved ones lost, to honor
9dedicated health professionals and to meet others and know they
10are not alone; and
11WHEREAS, Establishment of "Congenital Heart Defect Awareness
12Week" will also provide the opportunity to share experience and
13information with the public and the media in order to raise
14public awareness about congenital heart defects; therefore be it
15Resolved, That the House of Representatives designate
16February 7 through 14, 2013, as "Congenital Heart Defect
17Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania; and be it further
18Resolved, That the House of Representatives encourage all
19citizens to increase awareness, education and services for
20congenital heart defects which each year affect thousands of
21babies in Pennsylvania.
