A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE PASSING OF PASTOR AND MRS. SAMUEL LEE GOODWIN, SR., OF RICHLAND COUNTY AND TO EXTEND DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO THEIR LARGE AND LOVING FAMILY AND THEIR MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were saddened to learn of the death of Samuel Lee "Herc" Goodwin, Sr., at the age of seventy-six on April 1, 2020, and the death of his beloved wife, Fannie Mae Love Bland Goodwin, at the age of seventy-five just two weeks later on April 15, 2020; and

Whereas, Pastor Goodwin was born on September 6, 1943, to Annie Bell Jones Goodwin and Belton Goodwin, Sr., and Mrs. Goodwin was born to Marie Jackson Bland and Elijah Bland, Sr., the following year on August 7. They both were educated in Richland County School District One and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School, he in 1961 and she in 1962; and

Whereas, Fannie and Herc were married on August 22, 1963, and after he earned a bachelor's degree in education in 1965 from South Carolina State College, now University, Mr. Goodwin began a successful career in teaching and coaching at Brewer High School before returning to teach and coach for several years at his high school alma mater; and

Whereas, in 1973, he began his career in college coaching at his college alma mater, and he also coached at Witchita State University and the University of South Carolina. Mrs. Goodwin worked in a variety of employment over the years, the last of which was in the bursar's office at the University of South Carolina; and

Whereas, in 1983, God called Pastor Goodwin into the ministry, and along with Mrs. Goodwin, he founded Stedfast and Unmoveable Ministries, Inc. The Stedfast Christian Center held its first church service in April 1984 and Pastor Goodwin served as the pastor for almost thirty-six years. She remained active in community service; and

Whereas, together Pastor and Mrs. Goodwin reared five fine children: Johnny Bland, Dianne Goodwin, and Valerie Goodwin, all of Columbia; Samuel Goodwin, Jr., of Wichita, Kansas; and Elgin Goodwin of Simpsonville. They were blessed with the affection of four grandchildren: Jaquinna Bailey of Smyrna, Georgia; Katisha and Kayla Bland, both of Columbia; and Enoch Goodwin of Simpsonville; as well as a great-granddaughter, Makenzie Elle Bailey of Smyrna, Georgia; and

Whereas, in life and in death, they were not separated and are both buried at Lincoln Cemetery; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are grateful for the life and legacy of Fannie and Herc Goodwin and for the example of sacrifice and service they set for all who knew them. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution express profound sorrow upon the passing of Pastor and Mrs. Samuel Lee Goodwin, Sr., of Richland County and extend deepest sympathy to their large and loving family and their many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Pastor and Mrs. Samuel Lee Goodwin, Sr.
