A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE BEAVER CREEK BAPTIST SUNDAY SCHOOL CONVENTION OF WAGENER FOR ITS STRONG SUPPORT OF COLLEGE-BOUND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN AWARDING THE FIRST CLARENCE B. JENKINS, SR., MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP.

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the South Carolina House of Representatives recognizes those organizations that give tirelessly to the welfare of this great state's citizenry. Among the many blessings bestowed upon the people of South Carolina by one such exemplary organization, the Beaver Creek Baptist Sunday School Convention of Wagener, is the Clarence B. Jenkins, Sr., Memorial Scholarship; and

Whereas, the first recipient of the Clarence B. Jenkins, Sr., Memorial Scholarship will be honored on September 17, 2018, in a program to be held at the Bushy Pond Baptist Church of Norway; and

Whereas, Deacon Clarence B. Jenkins, Sr., for whom the scholarship is named, believed strongly in higher education. His heart, as well as his mind, was centered on nourishing education; and

Whereas, his accomplishments were numerous and impressive. He was the first black elected to the Orangeburg School Board District One (now Orangeburg Consolidated School District Four) and served that district as a trustee for over twenty years. He became the trumpeter for fairness that all mankind in the surrounding communities should receive a quality education; and

Whereas, Deacon Jenkins served as president and member of the Norway, Neeses, and Springfield Branch of the NAACP. In addition, he served as president and member of Concerned Citizens for District 96. As a member of the Norway Senior Citizen Association, he provided dedicated and unwavering commitment to the service of mankind, ensuring the betterment of all people; and

Whereas, as founder and co-owner of Jenkins Brothers Cement Finishing Company of Neeses, he uplifted his communities by providing local residents with job training and employment; and

Whereas, this man of faith served the Lord as a lifelong member of Bushy Pond Missionary Baptist Church, of Norway. He was an Adult Sunday School teacher and deacon rightly dividing the word of truth and as a Deacon who demonstrated dedicated service to God until his passing on August 28, 1992. He also served as president of Beaver Creek Educational and Missionary Sunday School and started the first scholarship to support educational opportunities for youth of member churches; and

Whereas, as president and member of the Norway Democratic Party Precinct, he felt the need for African Americans to be part of the political process and have a voice in their future. As a visionary, he increased voter participation through knowledge, access, and unity; and

Whereas, the members of the House recognize that the success of the State of South Carolina, the strength of its communities, and the vitality of American society as a whole depend, in great measure, upon the dedication of organizations like the Beaver Creek Baptist Sunday School Convention that use their knowledge, wisdom, and resources to serve others. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor the Beaver Creek Baptist Sunday School Convention of Wagener for its strong support of college-bound high school students in awarding the first Clarence B. Jenkins, Sr., Memorial Scholarship.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the Beaver Creek Baptist Sunday School Convention.
