relating to the burial of convict leasing victims and the | ||
establishment of a convict leasing victims memorial museum. | ||
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | ||
SECTION 1. Subchapter A, Chapter 442, Government Code, is | ||
amended by adding Sections 442.033 and 442.034 to read as follows: | ||
Sec. 442.033. CONVICT LEASING VICTIM BURIAL TREATMENT PLAN. | ||
The commission shall develop a comprehensive burial treatment plan | ||
for the remains of the 95 convict leasing victims discovered in 2018 | ||
at the site of the former Imperial State Prison Farm in Sugar Land. | ||
Sec. 442.034. CONVICT LEASING VICTIMS MEMORIAL MUSEUM. (a) | ||
The commission shall establish a convict leasing victims memorial | ||
museum to educate the public about the history and aftereffects of | ||
convict leasing in this state. | ||
(b) The commission shall employ a historian and other | ||
personnel to administer the museum. | ||
(c) The commission may solicit and accept gifts, donations, | ||
and grants of money or property from any public or private source to | ||
be used for the purposes of this section. | ||
SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2019. |
