A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 
AN ACT
  relating to including in the minimum attendance requirement of a
  public school student any absence of the student to participate in
  an extracurricular activity.
         BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
         SECTION 1.  Section 25.092, Education Code, is amended by
  adding Subsection (a-3) to read as follows:
         (a-3)  In determining if a student has complied with
  attendance requirements under Subsection (a), the school district
  may not include any absence of a student from class if the student
  is absent to attend an extracurricular activity. In this
  subsection "extracurricular activity" means a voluntary activity
  sponsored by the school district and includes preparation for and
  involvement in public performances, contests, athletic
  competitions, demonstrations, displays, and club activities.
         SECTION 2.  This Act applies beginning with the 2017-2018
  school year.
         SECTION 3.  This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
  a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
  provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution.  If this
  Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
  Act takes effect September 1, 2017.
