relating to the inclusion of information about the process of | ||
voting as part of the social studies curriculum requirements for | ||
public high school students. | ||
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | ||
SECTION 1. Section 28.002, Education Code, is amended by | ||
adding Subsection (c-4) to read as follows: | ||
(c-4) The State Board of Education shall adopt rules | ||
requiring a high school student, as part of the social studies | ||
curriculum under Subsection (a)(1)(D), to be provided at least once | ||
with practical information about the process of voting in public | ||
elections, including specific information about using the type of | ||
voting machines used by the county in which the student is enrolled. | ||
The rules shall require a school district, to the extent | ||
practicable, to seek assistance and cooperation from the county | ||
election office in providing students with exposure to and | ||
experience using the applicable voting machine. | ||
SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2019-2020 | ||
school year. | ||
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives | ||
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as | ||
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this | ||
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this | ||
Act takes effect September 1, 2019. |
