H.C.R. No. 58

HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Citizens and business leaders of Brazoria County are
gathering in Austin on February 28, 2023, for the 50th anniversary
of Brazoria County Day at the State Capitol, and this celebration
offers a fitting opportunity to recognize the event's founder, the
  late Wayne A. Shaw; and
WHEREAS, Looking for a way to advocate for the needs and
concerns of county residents, Mr. Shaw went to the Brazosport Area
Chamber of Commerce with the idea for Brazoria County Day; he
subsequently spearheaded efforts to create the event and gave the
day its distinctive flair, deciding to serve fresh shrimp to
distinguish it from other county days and nicknaming it "the
  World's Largest Shrimp Cocktail"; and
WHEREAS, The first Brazoria County Day, held in 1973, only
drew a handful of the county's residents, but over the past half
century, it has evolved into one of the most popular events of the
legislative season, attracting hundreds of participants; since its
founding, the day has been celebrated each year that the
legislature has been in session, with the exception of 2021 due to
the COVID-19 pandemic; this year's observance will be the first
since Mr. Shaw passed away in January 2020, and the event's
trademark shrimp is being served out of a boat christened the
SS Wayne Shaw in his honor; and
WHEREAS, Through his efforts to create Brazoria County Day,
Wayne Shaw set an inspiring example of community leadership and
civic engagement, and it is a pleasure to join in recognizing his
significant contributions to Brazoria County; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the 88th Legislature of the State of Texas
hereby honor the memory of Wayne A. Shaw on the occasion of the 50th
anniversary of Brazoria County Day at the State Capitol and pay
tribute to his life and achievements; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for his family as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives and Senate.
