| WHEREAS, Vanguard College Preparatory School in Waco | ||
| celebrated Emma's Day, its annual day of volunteering, on April 12, | ||
| 2019; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Every spring, the tradition inspires around 200 | ||
| students in grades 7 through 12 to devote half a day to serving the | ||
| community; originally known as Viking Volunteer Day, it was renamed | ||
| to honor the memory of a student, Emma Welter, who lost her life in a | ||
| vehicle accident while on her way to participate in the event on | ||
| February 9, 2000; and | ||
| WHEREAS, This year, Vanguard students volunteered at 17 | ||
| locations across the city of Waco, ranging from Mission Waco to | ||
| Habitat for Humanity to the Cameron Park Zoo; the event is designed | ||
| to help young people build character, learn about areas of need in | ||
| their community, and develop a sense of civic responsibility; and | ||
| WHEREAS, By mobilizing Vanguard students to get involved, | ||
| Emma's Day has helped support a host of worthy causes, while also | ||
| providing its participants with valuable skills and experiences | ||
| that will serve them well throughout their lives; now, therefore, | ||
| be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas | ||
| Legislature hereby commend the students of Vanguard College | ||
| Preparatory School for their involvement in Emma's Day 2019 and | ||
| extend to them sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it | ||
| further | ||
| RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
| prepared for Vanguard College Preparatory School as an expression | ||
| of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives. | ||
