HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 5037
Commending the Henrico High School Warriors boys' basketball team.

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, April 3, 2013
Agreed to by the Senate, April 3, 2013

WHEREAS, on March 8, 2013, triumphant members of the Henrico High School Warriors boys' basketball team celebrated their 72-48 victory over the John Marshall High School Justices to win the Virginia High School League Group AAA Central Region championship title, the school's first state championship in its 51-year history; and

WHEREAS, in the weeks of practice and preparation leading to the championship game, the excitement was palpable in the neighboring high schools; and

WHEREAS, due to the proximity of the high schools and other opportunities to play community basketball games together, many of the players at both schools were familiar with each other, which heightened intensity for the championship game; and

WHEREAS, the schools met twice during the season, with the Henrico Warriors winning both games, 84-66 in the Times Dispatch Invitational Tournament quarterfinals and 58-51 in the Central Region title game; and

WHEREAS, the Henrico Warriors were led on the court by De'Monte Buckingham, R. J. Moses, Ryan Pearson, Marvin Smith, Tim Jones, and Jordon Talley, with excellent free throws, foul shooting, rebounds, and three-pointers; and

WHEREAS, to the cheers of thrilled fans, "with his back to the basket and seconds ticking off the clock, Ryan Pearson tossed up a turn-around jumper from 30 feet out as the buzzer sounded," sealing the victory for the Henrico Warriors; and

WHEREAS, the Henrico Warriors dominated the game from start to finish to win their first state championship title in the school's 51-year history; the win is poignantly historic because the Central Region to which the schools currently belong will be dissolved by the Virginia High School League's realignment of schools, and Henrico High School and John Marshall High School will compete in different divisions next year; and

WHEREAS, the entire team worked hard and contributed throughout the season to the team's success; and

WHEREAS, head coach Vance Harmon provided outstanding leadership with the assistance of his staff of very capable assistant coaches and managers, and the Henrico Warriors enjoyed the support of parents, students, teachers, administration, staff, and the community throughout the season; and

WHEREAS, the entire Henrico community is proud of the young men of the Henrico Warriors for their exceptional achievements and historic championship; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Henrico High School Warriors boys' basketball team on winning the 2012-2013 Virginia High School League Group AAA Central Region state championship; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Vance Harmon, head coach of the Henrico High School Warriors boys' basketball team, requesting that he further disseminate copies of this resolution to the assistant coaches and members of the team, as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the team's championship performance.
