HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 265
Commending the George Mason University Green Machine.

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 24, 2015

WHEREAS, the George Mason University Green Machine, the university's accomplished pep band, was ranked first on NCAA.com's High Five: Best Pep Bands list in 2015; and

WHEREAS, the George Mason University (GMU) Green Machine was established in the 1980s by students of George Mason University in Fairfax; and

WHEREAS, the GMU Green Machine gained a fulltime faculty position when Dr. Michael "Doc Nix" Nickens joined the band after the success of the GMU men's basketball team in the 2006 NCAA Championships; and

WHEREAS, the GMU Green Machine has won numerous competitions and contests for pep bands; it was named Champion of the 2006 NCAA Battle of the Bands, the 2008 and 2009 CAA Best Pep Band by CAAZone.com, and the Most Entertaining Pep Band in College Basketball by Bleacher Report; and

WHEREAS, the GMU Green Machine has had numerous notable performances, including at the 2007 ESPN Old Spice Classic's Pep Band Challenge, the 2009 NCAA Frozen Four, where Doc Nix and the Green Machine performed as Bemidji State University's pep band, the 2011 and 2012 Colonial Athletic Association's Breakfast with the Bands intercollegiate pep band showcase, the 2012 celebration of the 40th Anniversary of George Mason University, the 2013 inauguration of George Mason University President Ángel Cabrera, and the 2014 Inaugural Parade of Governor Terence R. McAuliffe; and

WHEREAS, GMU Green Machine members have gone on to perform with multiple premier musical units, such as the United States Navy Band and the United States Air Force Academy Band, and have become members of other premier ensembles such as the National Symphony Orchestra and the Philadelphia Orchestra; and

WHEREAS, the GMU Green Machine's rehearsals have been viewed more than 22 million times on the Internet; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the George Mason University Green Machine hereby be commended on being ranked first on the High Five: Best Pep Bands list by NCAA.com; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the George Mason University Green Machine as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for the band's work to pep up the athletes and fans of George Mason University and represent one of the premier universities of the Commonwealth.
