WHEREAS, the United States was founded on democratic principles that recognize the vigilance with which fundamental individual human rights must be safeguarded in order to preserve freedom; and

WHEREAS, international law is designed to safeguard the fundamental human rights enshrined in the Geneva and Hague Conventions, and violations of such international law should be condemned by all freedom-loving people; and

WHEREAS, Human Rights Watch reports there are more than one million prisoners being held in internment camps in East Turkestan and being subjected to violations of these fundamental human rights; and

WHEREAS, many Uyghurs and other Central Asian ethnic minorities have been subject to arbitrary detention, harassment, and torture; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the human rights crisis related to the internment of Uyghurs and other Central Asian ethnic minorities be recognized; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Virginia House of Delegates condemns this violation of fundamental human rights; and, be it

RESOLVED FINALLY, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates transmit a copy of this resolution to the President of the United States, the President of the Senate, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and the members of the Virginia delegation to the United States Congress in order that they may be apprised of the sense of the Virginia House of Delegates in this matter.
