HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 608
Commending Avicia Beatrice Hooper Thorpe.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, May 30, 2018

WHEREAS, Avicia Beatrice Hooper Thorpe, one of the oldest living residents of the Commonwealth, celebrated her 110th birthday in 2018; and

WHEREAS, born on April 16, 1908, in Pittsylvania County, Avicia Thorpe witnessed the seminal events of the 20th century, from two world wars and the Great Depression to the moon landing and the rise of modern technology; and

WHEREAS, Avicia Thorpe graduated from Holbrook Presbyterian School as valedictorian and from Bluefield State College as salutatorian; and

WHEREAS, Avicia Thorpe began her long career as a teacher in 1933 at Westmoreland High School, then transferred to John M. Langston High School, where she taught English for more than 33 years, chaired the English department, and founded the school newspaper; and

WHEREAS, a woman of deep and abiding faith, Avicia Thorpe helped lead the congregation of Trinity Baptist Church along with her husband, the Reverend C. M. Thorpe; and

WHEREAS, Avicia Thorpe has received numerous awards and accolades in her lifetime, including a Teacher of the Year award from Langston High School and the 1982 NAACP Citizen of the Year award; she also became the first diamond member of Alpha Phi Omega with 75 years of service; and

WHEREAS, Avicia Thorpe is an active resident of Stratford Rehabilitation Center in Danville, and she enjoys sharing her wisdom and zest for life with her fellow residents, some of whom are even former students and others who proudly consider her a second mother; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Avicia Beatrice Hooper Thorpe hereby be commended on the occasion of her 110th birthday in 2018; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Avicia Beatrice Hooper Thorpe as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for her life well lived and best wishes.
