SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 5001
Commending the New Journal and Guide.

WHEREAS, the New Journal and Guide, the Commonwealth's oldest black weekly newspaper, will proudly celebrate its 113th anniversary in 2013; and

WHEREAS, the New Journal and Guide, originally known as the Gideon Safe Guide, was established by the Supreme Lodge Knights of Gideon, a black fraternal order, in 1900; and

WHEREAS, the New Journal and Guide underwent several name changes over the years and took its current name in 1991; and

WHEREAS, the New Journal and Guide has made many contributions to the local community under the leadership of P. B. Young, Sr.; Thomas Young; P. B. Young, Jr.; Bernard Young; Southall Bass; John Jordan; John Hinton; Dr. Milton Reid; and Dr. Carlton Goodlett; and

WHEREAS, Brenda Andrews, who joined the New Journal and Guide as the publisher's assistant in 1982, currently serves as the publisher and owner of the newspaper; and

WHEREAS, for 113 years, the New Journal and Guide has provided outstanding local, state, national, and international news coverage of issues that affect the African American community, winning four Wendell Willkie Awards for outstanding journalism; and

WHEREAS, today, the New Journal and Guide, published every Thursday, reaches readers across the nation and around the world; and

WHEREAS, the New Journal and Guide will celebrate its 113th anniversary and also the 30th anniversary of its publisher and owner, Brenda Andrews, at The 113 Thirty Celebration on April 13, 2013, at the Chesapeake Conference Center; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the New Journal and Guide on the occasion of its 113th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Brenda Andrews, the publisher and owner of the New Journal and Guide, as an expression of the General Assembly's congratulations and admiration for the newspaper's service to the Norfolk community.
