SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 5014
Commending Marsha Allgeier.

WHEREAS, Marsha Allgeier, the deputy county manager for Arlington County, will retire in 2013 after a distinguished career with the county spanning more than three decades; and

WHEREAS, a native of Hawaii, Marsha Allgeier earned a bachelor's degree from Brown University and a master's degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; and

WHEREAS, Marsha Allgeier worked for the Town of Chapel Hill, a consulting firm, and the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development before joining Arlington County as a community development planner in 1978; and

WHEREAS, Marsha Allgeier spent several years with what is now the Department of Community Planning, Housing and Development before moving to the Department of Human Services in 1988; she became deputy county manager in 2005; and

WHEREAS, dedicated to the well-being of Arlington County residents, Marsha Allgeier provided strong leadership to improve the county's services to the most vulnerable; and

WHEREAS, Marsha Allgeier led the decade-long effort to create the Mary Marshall Assisted Living Residence, which serves as the region's only assisted living residence for low-income older adults with mental illness and intellectual and developmental disabilities; and

WHEREAS, Marsha Allgeier implemented nationally and regionally recognized programs such as Arlington's Permanent Supportive Housing Program, the Residential Program Center, and the Homeless Services Center, which is slated to open in the fall of 2014; and

WHEREAS, current and future residents of Arlington will reap the benefits of Marsha Allgeier's labors on their behalf; and

WHEREAS, in her well-deserved retirement, Marsha Allgeier looks forward to spending time with family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Marsha Allgeier for her distinguished service to Arlington County on the occasion of her retirement; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Marsha Allgeier as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for her dedication to serving Arlington County residents.
