WHEREAS, Elizabeth Wood Stark Barton, a passionate educator who touched the lives of countless young people and served the Commonwealth in a variety of roles, died on March 1, 2019; and
WHEREAS, Elizabeth "Betsy" Barton grew up in Norfolk, where she graduated from Norfolk Academy; she continued her education at Stratford College in Danville; and
WHEREAS, in the 1970s, Betsy Barton was one of the first staff members at Busch Gardens Williamsburg; and
WHEREAS, Betsy Barton helped Chesterfield County students build a strong foundation for lifelong learning as a teacher at Providence Elementary School; she also offered her expertise to the Virginia Department of Education as a history and social science specialist, working tirelessly to support Virginia's teachers and students; and
WHEREAS, Betsy Barton freely offered her time and knowledge to the Commonwealth in service to the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Commission, the War of 1812 Commission, and the WWI and WWII Commemoration Commission; she played significant roles in historical commemorations in 2007 and 2019 and was an unwavering advocate for Virginia's Indian tribes; and
WHEREAS, Betsy Barton was a board member of the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma society for women educators, and an inspirational leader for girls at Camp Carysbrook during summers; and
WHEREAS, in memory and honor of her stepdaughter, Katie, Betsy Barton passionately supported LifeNet Health and the United Network for Organ Sharing; and
WHEREAS, in all her pursuits, Betsy Barton inspired those around her through her boundless enthusiasm, warm generosity, and positive spirit; and
WHEREAS, Betsy Barton will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her husband, Jonathan; her daughters, Liza and Archer; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of Virginia hereby note with great sadness the loss of Elizabeth Wood Stark Barton; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Elizabeth Wood Stark Barton as an expression of the Senate of Virginia's respect for her memory.
