on the death of hilda mae stutzman.

(TEXT OF BILL BEGINS ON NEXT PAGE)

Hilda Mae Stutzman passed away on March 21, 2011 at the age of 100.

Hilda Mae Peterson was born March 16, 1911 to Christoffer and Martha Peterson in Littlefield, Mohave County, where she was raised and attended elementary school.  Arizona was still a territory when Hilda was born, making her older than the state itself.

Hilda attended high school in Bunkerville, Nevada, but when she was fifteen years old she dropped out to do housecleaning and laundering to help support her two brothers and seven sisters.  At age seventeen, she moved to Las Vegas, where she waited tables and continued to earn money to help support her family.  While in Las Vegas, Hilda met Dennis Stutzman, a welder working on Hoover Dam, and they were married on June 30, 1934.  On completion of the dam in 1936, they moved to Montana and then served on a mission in Alberta, Canada before returning to Las Vegas.  In 1946, they had a son, Sheryl Dennis.  The family eventually moved to Bisbee where they remained until finally settling in Tucson in the 1970s.

Hilda's beloved husband, Dennis, died in the 1980s and she lived alone from then on.  She took up walking as a hobby and logged two miles a day around the trailer park where she lived.  Neighbors remember sitting outside watching for her as she passed by, and she continued her daily walks until she was ninety-seven years old.  Hilda led a full and active life and participated in various church activities over the years.  She loved her family and friends and was a friend to everyone she met.

Hilda was blessed with five grandchildren and seven great‑grandchildren, the youngest of whom, Jaxon, was born last year on her ninety‑ninth birthday.  Her family and friends gathered on March 19, 2011 for Hilda's 100th birthday celebration.  Just two days later, Hilda passed away.

Therefore

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of Arizona:

That the Members of the House of Representatives express regret at the passing of Hilda Mae Stutzman and extend their condolences to her family and friends.
