START_STATUTE15-1826.  Postsecondary remedial courses; tuition reimbursement; definition

A.  If a student who graduated from a high school in a school district in this state and who is enrolled at a university under the jurisdiction of the Arizona board of regents or at a community college in this state is required to enroll in any remedial course at the university or community college in the student's first academic year of postsecondary instruction, the school district where the student graduated from high school shall reimburse the university or community college district for the cost of tuition for the remedial courses.  The amount of reimbursement shall not exceed the total amount of tuition charged to that student by the university or community college district for remedial courses during the student's first academic year of postsecondary instruction.

C.  For the purposes of this section, "remedial course" means a course that is offered by a university or community college and that is designed to correct a student's deficiencies in one or more basic academic skills such as mathematics, English or writing in order to allow the student to perform at a level of competence necessary for postsecondary study.
