AN ACT CONCERNING ENFORCEMENT OF FIRE CODE PROVISIONS REQUIRING SMOKE AND CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS IN RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Assembly convened:

That chapter 541 of the general statutes be amended to provide that a local building official shall order any person holding a building permit for the construction or renovation of a residential building to immediately cease work when, in the course of such building official's first inspection of the newly constructed or renovated building, he or she observes that properly functioning permanent or temporary smoke or carbon monoxide detection and warning equipment has not been installed in violation of section 29-292 or 29-315b of the general statutes.

Statement of Purpose:

To add an enforcement mechanism for local building officials who discover that requirements pertaining to smoke and carbon monoxide detection and warning equipment have not been followed.
