A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Professor Jacqueline S. Wheeler; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Professor Jacqueline S. Wheeler has long been recognized by the citizens of this state for the vital role that she has played in higher education and her deep personal commitment to the students of Georgia; and

WHEREAS, Professor Wheeler is a teacher, actor, director, choreographer, and veteran of theatre who began her teaching career in Georgia at Piedmont College in 1969; and

WHEREAS, she has inspired young leaders as an instructor at Valdosta State University since 1980, where she serves as chair of the Theatre and Dance Area, teaching, assisting in the administration of two degree programs, and coordinating fundraising activities and the school's annual Theatre for Young Audiences Tour that presents plays and musicals throughout South Georgia; and

WHEREAS, Professor Wheeler has served on local arts councils in Douglas and Valdosta and as artistic director of the Jekyll Island Musical Theatre Festival and the Peach State Summer Theatre, chair of the Lowndes-Valdosta Arts Commission, a theatre panelist for the Georgia Council for the Arts, and president of Georgia Theatre Conference; and

WHEREAS, she has been recognized with numerous honors and accolades, including the Leighton Ballew Award for Outstanding Service in Theatre to Georgia, the Georgia Theatre Conference's highest honor; induction into the Georgia Theatre Conference's Georgia Theatre Hall of Fame; election to the Georgia Theatre Conference's Georgia Repertory Ensemble of Artists and Theatre Fellows; and the Kennedy Center/Stephen Sondheim Inspirational Teacher Award; and

WHEREAS, Professor Wheeler is an active member of the National Association of Schools of Theatre and Southeastern Theatre Conference, serving on its auditions committee; and
WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the extraordinary accomplishments of this distinguished Georgian be appropriately recognized.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend Professor Jacqueline S. Wheeler for her sacrifice, foresight, accomplishments, and contributions on behalf of education and for the positive influence she has had upon the lives and futures of countless young people.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Professor Jacqueline S. Wheeler.
