A
RESOLUTION
Honoring
the life and memory of Mr. James Vaughn Paschal; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the State of Georgia mourns the passing of one of its finest citizens and
businessmen, Mr. James Vaughn Paschal, on November 28, 2008; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Paschal was born on October 8, 1920, in Thomson, Georgia, the beloved son of
the late Henry and Lizzie Paschal; and
WHEREAS,
educated in the public schools of McDuffie County, Georgia, Mr. Paschal's
entrepreneurial spirit was ignited at the age of 13, when he constructed and
opened a shoe shine business with the goal to raise enough capital to finance a
bigger business; and
WHEREAS,
following a noble and courageous stint in the United States Army and working for
two years with the Pullman Company, Mr. Paschal partnered with his brother,
Robert, to make their life-long dream of opening a restaurant become reality;
and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Paschal and his brother opened Paschal's Restaurant as a 30 seat
luncheonette in 1947 and expanded to a larger location in 1959 in order to bring
their southern style home cooking to more hungry and loyal patrons;
and
WHEREAS,
in 1967, the Paschals opened the Paschal Motor Hotel, a 120 room lodging with a
swimming pool, a restaurant, and numerous meeting rooms, which served as meeting
places for key civil rights leaders and strategists, including Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr.; and
WHEREAS,
Paschal's Restaurant grew in fame and popularity, with visits from political
leaders, community activists, and such distinguished figures as President Bill
Clinton; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Paschal was honored with numerous awards during his lifetime, including The
Lifetime Achievement Award in Business by Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, The
Trailblazer Award by the National Association of Black Hotel Owners, Operators,
and Developers, and the 50+ Years in Business Award from the Atlanta Business
League and was an inductee in their Hall of Fame; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Paschal was united in love and marriage for 58 years to the late Phyllis
Paschal and the couple was blessed with a remarkable son, Curtis;
and
WHEREAS,
this talented businessman's work ethic, determination, vision, deliberate
decisions, and supportive nature will long be remembered by family, friends,
employees, and neighbors.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body honor the life and memory of Mr. James Vaughn Paschal and commend his
great achievements.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mr. Paschal's
family.
