and
WHEREAS,

WHEREAS,
he spent the 1977 season as the first base coach for the New York Yankees, who

a Braves team that had finished in last place in the preceding two years, and
took the team to an 81-80 record in 1980; and
WHEREAS,
in the strike-shortened 1981 season, the Braves finished in fifth place and
Braves owner Ted Turner fired him; and, when asked by the media who was on his
short list to replace Bobby Cox, Turner replied, "It would be Bobby Cox if I
hadn't just fired him. We need someone like him around here."; and
WHEREAS,
the next season, Bobby Cox joined the Toronto Blue Jays as their manager and
again took over a team that had finished in last place for several years and
took the team to a fifth-place finish with a 78-84 record; and
WHEREAS,
he followed the success of the 1982 season by leading the Blue Jays to their
first winning seasons in 1983 and 1984 before winning the American League East
division title in 1985; and
WHEREAS,
in 1986, he returned to the Braves as their general manager and, in the middle
of the 1990 season, to correct slumping team performance and attendance, he
again took over as the manager; and
WHEREAS,
after finishing in last place in 1990, he led the Braves to a first-place finish
in 1991 and a World Series appearance; and
