A
RESOLUTION
Amending
the Rules of the House of Representatives so as to provide for the Pledge of
Allegiance to the Georgia Flag; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Sexta Eavenson Strickland's intense love for her native state led her to write
the Pledge of Allegiance to the Georgia Flag in 1929; and
WHEREAS,
the Pledge of Allegiance to the Georgia Flag was immediately adopted by the
executive board of the Georgia branch of the Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims
on July 26, 1929; and
WHEREAS,
in 1935, House Resolution 239 was presented to the Georgia General Assembly for
official adoption; and
WHEREAS,
House Resolution 239 was adopted by the House of Representatives on March 20,
1935, and by the Senate on March 21, 1935; and
WHEREAS,
Governor Eugene Talmadge signed House Resolution 239 on March 28, 1935,
designating the official Pledge of Allegiance to the Georgia Flag;
and
WHEREAS,
Code Section 50-3-3 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated says:
"The
state flag shall be displayed on appropriate occasions in the public and private
schools of this state and in all patriotic meetings, and the citizens of the
state are requested to take the pledge of allegiance set out in Code Section
50-3-2"; and
WHEREAS,
Code Section 50-3-2 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated says:
"The
following is adopted as the pledge of allegiance to the state flag:
'I
pledge allegiance to the Georgia flag and to the principles for which it stands:
Wisdom, Justice, and Moderation.'"; and
WHEREAS,
it is only fitting to begin each legislative day by being reminded of the State
Motto: Wisdom, Justice, and Moderation.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the Rules of the
House of Representatives are amended by striking paragraph (3) of Rule 31 and
inserting in its place the following:
"(3)
Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America
and Pledge of
Allegiance to the Georgia Flag."
