A RESOLUTION


Commending Latinos in Information Science and Technology Association and recognizing April, 2010, as LISTA Hispanic Empowerment Month at the state capitol; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Hispanic students are the fastest growing student group in this nation's schools, exceeding 20 percent of total public school enrollment and rising rapidly; and

WHEREAS, Hispanics are significantly under represented among college students and college graduates, with Hispanic students graduating high school at a 23 percent lower rate than the national average and only 35 percent of Latinos earning high enough standardized test scores to qualify them for college; and

WHEREAS, Latinos in Information Science and Technology Association (LISTA) is a national organization that works to strengthen the quality and competitiveness of the nation's technology workforce by improving preparation, access, and advancement of Hispanics; and

WHEREAS, LISTA has regional chapters that bring together information sciences and technology professionals and major national corporations to increase awareness of the importance of preparing Hispanic students for careers in information sciences and technology; and

WHEREAS, LISTA's Atlanta Center for Excellence in Information Sciences and Technology provides community access to professional courses and workshops that demystify technology and teach internet and networking technology basics to participants; and

WHEREAS, on April 28, 2010, LISTA will hold its second annual Tech Latino Luncheon Series at the Loudermilk Center in Atlanta, Georgia, providing a forum for Hispanics in information science, technology, and telecommunications industries; and

WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the outstanding work of this fine organization and its numerous contributions to the citizens of this state be appropriately recognized.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend the effective service of the Latinos in Information Science and Technology Association to Georgia's Hispanic citizens and recognize April, 2010, as LISTA Hispanic Empowerment Month at the state capitol.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Latinos in Information Science and Technology Association.
