A RESOLUTION

Recognizing March, 2009, as Kidney Disease Prevention Month at the state capitol; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, in 2006, more than 17,400 residents in Georgia suffered permanent, irreversible kidney failure known as end-stage kidney disease and required kidney dialysis or a kidney transplant in order to survive; and

WHEREAS, 2,419 Georgians were on the wait list for a kidney transplant as of February, 2009; and

WHEREAS, the National Kidney Foundation estimates that as many as 26 million Americans, or 1 in 9 adults, have chronic kidney disease; and

WHEREAS, most individuals with end-stage kidney disease, regardless of their age, rely on either Medicare or Medicaid as the primary payor of dialysis; and

WHEREAS, early detection and treatment of kidney disease could delay the progression of chronic kidney disease, resulting in fewer patients requiring dialysis treatments or a kidney transplant; and

WHEREAS, the National Kidney Foundation of Georgia provides programs and services for kidney patients and their families and hosts kidney disease screenings for high-risk patients, including individuals with diabetes or hypertension; and

WHEREAS, March 12, 2009, has been declared World Kidney Day and March is National Kidney Month in America, and, in recognition, each citizen of this state is encouraged to become aware of the leading causes of kidney disease and to be tested for early detection through their physician or at a community based screening.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend the outstanding services the National Kidney Foundation of Georgia provides for citizens of Georgia and recognize March, 2009, as Kidney Disease Prevention Month at the state capitol.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the National Kidney Foundation of Georgia.
