A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending the Clayton State University women's basketball team on winning the NCAA Division II National Championship; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the Lady Lakers earned the top ranking in the nation through perseverance, determination, and dedication with an awe-inspiring 69-50 victory over Michigan Technological University to capture the NCAA Division II National Championship title; and

WHEREAS, the national championship is the first for Clayton State in any sport in the school's athletic history; and

WHEREAS, this amazing feat marks the first time a women's basketball team in the Peach Belt Conference has won a national championship and the first women's basketball team from a four-year university in Georgia to hold the title; and

WHEREAS, the Lady Lakers finished their championship season with a 35-1 overall record; and

WHEREAS, the 2010 national champions included Ashley Aker, Timethia Bennett, Latonda Bruce, Brenanna Fort, Drameka Griggs, Brittany Hall, Jene'e Jemison, Genesis Kelly, Jorane Metelus, Teshymia Tillman, Lesheria Stevens, LaDe'sha Stoudemire, and Tanisha Woodard; and

WHEREAS, the phenomenal performance of the team is a clear indication of the outstanding athletic ability, the dedication and hard work, and the unity of purpose and spirit of each member of the team and their superb offensive and defensive talents; and

WHEREAS, Teshymia Tillman finished her two-year career at Clayton State as the NCAA Division II Elite Eight Most Valuable Player with a total of 1,055 career points, while Drameka Griggs was selected to the All-Tournament Team; and
WHEREAS, the team was led by the astute direction of Head Coach Dennis Cox and Assistant Coaches Kaleena Coleman and Shantel Ragin; and

WHEREAS, as this magnificent team earned its well-deserved reputation for excellence by performing with courage and precision over months of training and competition, it is abundantly proper to call them champions.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend the Clayton State University women's basketball team on their successful season and congratulate the players and coaches on their NCAA Division II National Championship title.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Head Coach Dennis Cox.
