A RESOLUTION


Honoring the life and memory of Mr. George Coleman; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one its finest and distinguished citizens, Mr. George Coleman, on October 21, 2008; and

WHEREAS, a native of Atlanta, Georgia, Mr. Coleman earned his degree from Lincoln University of Missouri; and

WHEREAS, in the 1950's, Mr. Coleman began reporting and editing for the Atlanta Daily World, gaining firsthand knowledge of Atlanta's African American community and the civil rights movement; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Coleman was passionate about history, collecting books about the history of Atlanta and African Americans and imparting the interesting things he learned to others; and

WHEREAS, also a talented artist, Mr. Coleman enjoyed writing poetry, sketching, and painting, his talent recognized by Morris Brown College, where sketches drawn by Mr. Coleman and inspired by his poetry were exhibited; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Coleman was a member of St. Paul of the Cross church for 53 years and worked with the archdiocese to promote racial awareness; and

WHEREAS, his surviving family includes his wife, Norma Coleman, his daughters, Minette Coleman and Jimmie Barnett, his son, George Coleman, Jr., eight grandchildren, and one great-grandchild; and

WHEREAS, all who were privileged to know this distinguished Georgian join his family in mourning his loss.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that this body hereby joins in honoring the life and memory of Mr. George Coleman and commending his many great achievements.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mr. George Coleman.
