A RESOLUTION


Commending the South Cobb High School Marching Band; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the South Cobb High School Marching Band has long been recognized for the musical talent of each of its members and the outstanding musical direction and leadership of its director, Zachary Cogdill; and

WHEREAS, the Blue Eagles were selected by the Presidential Inaugural Committee from more than 1,300 applicants to participate in the inaugural parade for President-elect Barack Obama in Washington, D.C.; and

WHEREAS, the band will march down Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the Presidential viewing stand while performing "Georgia On My Mind," by Hoagy Carmichael, and "Summon the Heroes," a tune composed by John Williams for the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta; and

WHEREAS, the band's extensive and powerful application to the Presidential Inauguration Committee included 15 letters of recommendation; a student scrapbook expressing patriotism, school pride, and passion for music; a DVD of the band's performance in the Bands of America competition; and an audio recording of the band and video production produced by the South Cobb High School Video and Broadcasting production class; and

WHEREAS, the South Cobb High School Marching Band has thrilled the citizens of Georgia by becoming Georgia's musical representative in the 56th Presidential Inaugural Parade.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize and commend the South Cobb High School Marching Band for its selection to perform in the 56th Presidential Inaugural Parade and for its many contributions to the citizens of the City of Austell, Cobb County, and the State of Georgia.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the South Cobb High School Marching Band.
