RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending Dr. Daniel S. Papp; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Dr. Daniel S. Papp has long been recognized for the vital role that he has
played in higher education and his deep personal commitment to students;
and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Papp is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Dartmouth College and earned a Ph.D. in
international affairs from the University of Miami; and
WHEREAS,
he joined Georgia Tech's faculty in 1973 as an assistant professor of
international affairs, became director of Georgia Tech's School of Social
Sciences from 1980 to 1990, founding director of Georgia Tech's Sam Nunn School
of International Affairs from 1990 to 1993, an executive assistant to the
president of Georgia Tech from 1994 to 1997, interim president of Southern
Polytechnic State University from 1997 to 1998, senior vice chancellor for
academics and fiscal affairs of the University System of Georgia from 2000 to
2006, and is currently president of Kennesaw State University; and
WHEREAS,
under his leadership, KSU has risen in academic stature as it became a
doctorate-granting institution and launched its first Ph.D. program;
and
WHEREAS,
since Dr. Papp became president, KSU also completed its transition to NCAA
Division I and expanded its infrastructure with the opening of state-of-the-art
buildings, such as the student dining hall, the 8,300 seat KSU soccer stadium,
and the health sciences building; and
WHEREAS,
in 1993, he was recognized as Georgia Tech's "Distinguished Professor," the
first time the honor went to faculty other than an engineer or physical
scientist, and has been awarded the Army's Outstanding Civilian Service Medal
twice; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Papp has authored or edited ten books and has published more than 60 journal
articles and chapters in edited books; and
WHEREAS,
it is abundantly fitting and proper that the extraordinary accomplishments of
this distinguished gentleman be appropriately recognized.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend
Dr. Daniel S. Papp for his sacrifice, foresight, accomplishment, and
contributions on behalf of education and for the positive influence he has had
upon the lives and futures of countless young people.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Dr. Daniel S. Papp.
