A RESOLUTION


Honoring the life and memory of Mr. George W. "Jack" Strickland, Jr.; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens with the passing of Mr. George W. "Jack" Strickland, Jr., on April 5, 2010; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Strickland was born on March 1, 1925, a beloved son of George W. Strickland, Sr., and Carrie Bell Sikes Strickland and was raised in Daisy, Georgia; and

WHEREAS, he served as a guardian of this nation's freedom and liberty with the United States Army, valiantly and courageously protecting his fellow Americans from February of 1943 to December of 1945; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Strickland purchased Evans Concrete Products Company in 1948 which he expanded over the years to include 14 ready mix concrete plants and two sand mine operations by the time of his retirement from the company in 2002; and

WHEREAS, a compassionate philanthropist, Mr. Strickland made numerous contributions to organizations and communities to improve the quality of life in Evans County and the surrounding areas, including funding for the Jack Strickland Rehabilitation Center and the addition of the birthing center at Evans Memorial Hospital; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Strickland's leadership and vision were instrumental to numerous organizations, including the Claxton Rotary Club, the Claxton/Evans County Chamber of Commerce, the board of directors for the Claxton Bank, Claxton Lions Club, Evans County Farm Bureau, American Legion, Georgia Society of Professional Engineers, and the National Ready Mix Concrete Association; and

WHEREAS, he was a founding member of the Evans County Wildlife Club and the Evans Heights Golf Club and was honored as Employer of the Year by Claxton Business and Professional Women's Club; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Strickland was united in love and marriage to Muriel Anderson, and enjoyed fishing, golfing, and hunting with his beloved bird dogs; and

WHEREAS, he gave inspiration to many through his high ideals, morals, and deep concern for his fellow citizens, and the devotion, patience, and understanding he demonstrated to his family and friends were admired by others; and

WHEREAS, a compassionate and generous man, Mr. Strickand will long be remembered for his love of family and friendship, and this loyal husband, community leader, and friend will be missed by all who had the great fortune of knowing him.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in honoring the life and memory of Mr. George W. "Jack" Strickland, Jr., and express their deepest and most sincere regret at his passing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Mr. George W. "Jack" Strickland, Jr.
