HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

RECOGNIZING pETER aPO FOR HIS OUTSTANDING SERVICE AND CONTRIBUTION TO THE STATE OF HAWAII AND THE NATIVE HAWAIIAN PEOPLE.

 


     WHEREAS, in 1961 PETER APO, a native Hawaiian who grew up in Makaha, graduated from the University of Oregon after attending high school at the Mid-Pacific Institute.

 

     WHEREAS, PETER APO began his distinguished public service career by serving on the first Board of Trustees of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs in 1980 returning to this position in 2010 for an additional two terms ending in 2018; and

 

     WHEREAS, PETER APO continued his admirable service with twelve years as a state legislature in the Hawai'i State House of Representatives rising to become Vice-Speaker; and

 

     WHEREAS, in addition to his state government experience, PETER APO has a respected community service record serving as Director of Culture & Arts and Director of the Waikiki Development for the City & County of Honolulu, and on the board of the Hawai'i Visitors & Convention Bureau; and

 

     WHEREAS, due to his loyal service in the legislature and community, PETER APO had the privilege of being appointed Special Assistant on Hawaiian Affairs under Governor Ben Cayetano; and

 

     WHEREAS, his admirable, forward-thinking and unwavering commitment to the Native Hawaiian people in addition to his years of public service led the Department of Defense to appoint PETER APO Civilian Aide to the U.S. Secretary of Army for Hawai'i; and

 

     WHEREAS, throughout his career, PETER APO has supported education and native Hawaiian culture by serving as a Regent of Chaminade University, chairing the board of directors for both the Historic Hawai'i Foundation and the Pacific Islanders in Communications National Public Broadcasting Network Hawai'i, and was a founding member of the Native Hawaiian Hospitality Association; and

 

     WHEREAS, PETER APO'S long history of service spans to the private sector as well, where he currently serves as President of the Peter Apo Company, a Hawaiian event planning consultant agency; and

 

     WHEREAS, PETER APO has been recognized as a great musician, singer-songwriter and recording artist by winning the prestigious Na Hoku Hanohano Hawai’i music award; and

 

     WHEREAS, PETER APO is an author of numerous articles and manuscripts on Hawaiian politics and culture and regularly speaks on topics ranging from Hawaiian culture, Hawai’i political systems, and sustainable growth issues and continues to serve the community on numerous boards and commissions; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirtieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2020, that this body recognizes PETER APO for his outstanding service, accomplishments and contribution to the State of Hawai'i and the Native Hawaiian people and extend our warmest wishes for his continued success.
