WHEREAS, our youth represent the foundation of Hawaii's future, and the Legislature is always proud to recognize the achievements of those conscientious, energetic, and talented individuals who epitomize the best and the brightest of Hawaii's next generation; and

WHEREAS, the Tomorrow's Leaders Award honors youth who have dedicated their efforts to support victims of crimes by taking a stance against bullying, peer pressure, domestic violence, stalking, human trafficking, child abuse, campus sexual assault, and victimization of minority communities; and

WHEREAS, MIKI K. NISHIZAWA began her advocacy work while still a student at Waipahu High School and at the University of Hawaii, she has continued to lead efforts to raise awareness about teen and domestic violence through her work with Parents and Children Together, which has resulted in significant impacts on both local and national levels; and

WHEREAS, MIKI K. NISHIZAWA joined Waipahu High School's Youth for Safety Club, which was initially intended to address classroom, road, and vehicle safety; she soon realized that her fellow classmates were also being impacted by teen and domestic violence and as a result, she initiated a collaboration with social service providers to create a template for all Hawaii schools to use as they join efforts to prevent teen and domestic violence; and

WHEREAS, MIKI K. NISHIZAWA's strength of character and demonstrated integrity have earned her the trust of both her fellow students and school administrators; she has also taken her work beyond the school and into the Waipahu community, the Hawaii State Keiki Caucus, and to national youth organizations; and

WHEREAS, MIKI K. NISHIZAWA has also rallied the Legislature to focus on bills supporting domestic violence education at the school level and her efforts have reached an entirely new group of individuals in the student community who would have otherwise not been aware of the support available to them; and

WHEREAS, MIKI K. NISHIZAWA serves as an inspiration to the young people of Hawaii to follow their dreams and have the courage and dedication to live up to their full potential; now, therefore,
