HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

H.R. NO.

66

TWENTY-EIGHTH LEGISLATURE, 2016

STATE OF HAWAII

HOUSE RESOLUTION

RECOGNIZING the sacrifices and contributions of our VIETNAM VETERANS AS WE CELEBRATE THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE VIETNAM WAR.

WHEREAS, 2015 marked the 50th anniversary of United States ground troops arriving in Vietnam; and

WHEREAS, the 50th Anniversary of Vietnam Commemorative Committee, authorized by this body and the Governor of Hawaii, is leading our state’s efforts to honor the service and sacrifice of Vietnam-era Veterans, from 2015 through 2017; and

WHEREAS, the 50th Anniversary of Vietnam Commemorative Committee is assisting a grateful nation in thanking and honoring our Vietnam Veterans and their families, as well as the fallen, the wounded, those who were held as Prisoners of War, and those listed as missing and unaccounted for; and

WHEREAS, our appreciation and gratitude is all the more meaningful today, when considering that the service and sacrifice of our Vietnam Veterans has been overlooked and underappreciated at times; and

WHEREAS, the gentlemen we recognize today belong to a generation of honorable men who served with distinction, yet whose bravery and commitment to our country was not always appreciated, and sometimes even the subject of ridicule and hurtful rhetoric, given the popular anti-war sentiments of those times; and

WHEREAS, the trail that these gentlemen blazed has now paved the way for current realization that as citizens of our country, we should always appreciate the service of and sacrifices made by the men and women of our armed forces, regardless of what our personal political beliefs may be; and

WHEREAS, five Vietnam Veterans in particular – COL. EDWARD R. CRUICKSHANK, US Army (Ret.), LtCol RICHARD SPOTSWOOD ROBERTSON, USMC (Ret.), LtCol DAVID E. BELATTI, USMC (Ret.), Mr. DAVID UMEDA, US Army Veteran, and Mr. RENE BERTHIAUME, USMC Veteran – embody the courage, dedication, and selflessness of all Vietnam Veterans who deserve to be thanked and honored, including those held as Prisoners of War or listed as missing in action; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-eighth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2016, that this body hereby thanks and honors the above-named gentlemen and their families, as well as all Vietnam Veterans for their service during the war and their continued contributions upon returning home to our nation and the State of Hawaii.
