HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

URGING THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION TO BROADEN THE CONTENT OF THE SOCIAL SCIENCE CURRICULUM TO INCLUDE VARIOUS PRINCIPLES OF DIVERSITY.

 

 


     WHEREAS, teaching principles of diversity prepares students to be global citizens by exposing them to different cultures and social groups; and

 

     WHEREAS, exposure to principles of diversity allows students to be prepared to work in settings and situations with various groups of people; and

 

     WHEREAS, studies show that students feel safer in and out of school when they receive an education that includes a variety of diverse perspectives; and

 

     WHEREAS, learning about different social, ethnic, and religious cultures allows students to become comfortable with cultural differences across social groups and comfortable with their own identity; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Department of Education has made great strides to include principles of diversity in its social science curriculum to more accurately reflect the roles of women and different racial and ethnic groups in society and throughout history; and

 

     WHEREAS, being educated about diversity increases cultural competence and reduces discriminatory stereotyping; and

 

     WHEREAS, our community as a whole will greatly benefit from enhancing our cultural competence to include gender, sexual orientation, and religion; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Department of Education's anchor standard SS.9-12.5.1, highlights the importance for students to identify local, regional, and global problems and issues using interdisciplinary lenses; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirtieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2020, that the Department of Education is urged to include social issues and historical perspectives of gender identity, sexual orientation, and religious practices in its social science curriculum; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Governor, Chairperson of the Board of Education, and Superintendent of Education.
